Millennials still playing video games?

Ageism within gaming is something that is often seen and isn’t always looked over in today’s society. 2 in 3 millennials play video games more than once a week which I found out in an article done by superdata research. You may sometimes hear parents or older adults who don’t play video games say they don’t like seeing adults play video games. They are looking at video games as something that should be left to children and teenagers. There are different reasons why a person in the millennial age group plays video games. Most of the games that’re played by the 25-34-year-old age group are now a form of trans-mediation they were once games they played when they were younger and have since come out with newer versions of the game. It could also be an example of them trying to enjoy a piece of their childhood that they can no longer have and chose video games instead. Also, since games are so accessible with being able to use them on smartphones and other handhelds you can literally have a game anywhere. If we looked more into the gender of who is playing video games the most you will then see that males play more video games than females.

  1. I think this is a very interesting angle on millennials and gaming. Especially considering I have tons of Aunts who may claim they don't play video games but love them some Candy Crush. Or they'll even sit down and play a game of online solitaire. While that may be more transmedia than anything, I still think it can be considered a video game. I don't know if they're trying to "preserve their childhood" as you said or simply just pass the time.

  2. I believe it is important to note that COVID-19 shut down the whole world and that left people much more time to play video games, and engage more deeply into media, and what was going on in the world. I believe video games became an outlet to many during this pandemic. I believe that millennial's playing games are a way of returning to their childhoods which constitutes as simpler times. I am thrilled that millennials have went back to video gaming and technology has progressed so much that many older games can be adapted by trans mediation.

  3. I think that people are looking at this wrong. I don’t think there is anything wrong with adults wanting to play video games. Me personally, I think video games help a lot when it comes to stress relief. I think playing help relax people’s minds and it gives them a escape from reality that a lot of people desperately need. Adults shouldn’t be shunned for wanting to have a little fun in their lives. People should look at this as something great because at least they’re finding fun and healthy ways to get their stress out.
